Energetic and mischievous. Doesn't care much for rules. ​He's also very intelligent and inventive, despite his seemingly easy-going attitude.

An orphan, he was raised by Jiang Fengmian, who treats him like his own child. He's devoted to his adoptive siblings, Jiang Cheng and Yanli, and would do anything for them. ​

​

He became a bit obsessed with getting Lan Wangji's attention since they fought during his first night at Cloud Recesses. Now they're both hostages of the Wen clan, he's concerned that Lan Wangji's stoicism is going to lead to him being hurt further. 

​

He's terrified of dogs.

​

As a teenager he's known for being an amazingly skilled cultivator, but also for his stubborn adherence to the many, many rules of the Lan clan, and his taciturn demeanor. Looks up to his older brother, Xichen.

His sword is named Bichen, and he is very skilled with the guqin.

Seems to be both intrigued by and frustrated with Wei Wuxian since they fought the first night Wei Wuxian arrived at Cloud Recesses, though he's looked at him in a new light since he overheard his pledge to uphold justice. 

 

Returned to Cloud Recesses when news reached them that they were under attack by the Wen clan. He ends up captured, and his leg broken.

Younger brother of the Qinghe Nie clan leader, who he is almost the exact opposite of. He's also a bit scared of his brother.

He has a zero interest in cultivating or sword work, preferring to spend his time with his friends goofing off, and painting fans, much to his brother's frustration. As a result, he has zero fighting skills.

He and Wei Wuxian quickly became friends at Cloud Recesses on account of their shared playful demeanors.

Meng Yao was his brother's right-hand man, and often serves as a buffer between them; Nie Huaisang seems concerned about what's going to happen to him now. 

Polite, very capable, and incredibly intelligent, but he also has a dark side- he murdered the captain of the guard under the cover of the Wen attack, and refused to take full responsibility for his actions.

Now that he's been kicked out of the Nie Clan  it's unclear where he's planning to go.

A bastard son of the Jin clan leader, and half-brother of Jin Zixuan.

​

His mother was a prostitute, and he is sensitive to people making comments about his parentage.

​

Was immediately attracted to Lan Xichen when they met at Cloud Recesses, and is concerned for his safety.

Leader of the Nie clan, and older brother of Nie Huaisang. Owner of Baxia ("to be ruled by force").

Good friends with Lan Xichen.

Known for his temper and black-and-white view of morality.

Witnessed Meng Yao murder the captain of the guard. He was unable to execute him, however, and kicked him out of the clan. 

Leader of the Yunmeng Jiang clan. Father of Jiang Cheng and Yanli.

A calm and caring man, the other clan leaders seem to value his input.

​

He took in Wei Wuxian after the death of his parents, and treats him like his own child. In fact, some might argue he treats him better than his own son, as he's seems to favor him over Jiang Cheng, a fact that is not lost on his son. This has lead to rumors that Wei Wuxian is actually his biological child. 

​

The youngest of the Yunmeng siblings; he and Wei Wuxian are adopted brothers; Lanyi is his biological sister. Heir to the Yungmeng Jiang sect. He's trying very hard to learn the skills he needs to be a good leader in the future.​

​

Has a crush on Wen Qing. He previously bought a comb to give to her, but he has yet to do so.

​

While he's concerned that Wei Wuxian's antics are going to get them all intro trouble and he seems a bit jealous of him at times, he really loves him like a brother, and seems a bit jealous that his brother wants to spend time with Lan Wangji. While they are hostages to the Wen clan, he strongly feels that they need to keep their heads down and focus on keeping themselves safe.

Wife of Jiang Fengmian, mother of Jiang Cheng and Yanli.

A skilled cultivator from an important family, she's assertive and critical.

 

She's concerned by her husband's favoritism towards Wei Wuxian, whom she doesn't seem to care for very much. She is especially hard on her son, and often negatively compares his abilities to abilities to Wei Wuxian's. She's also concerned that Wei Wuxian's actions will get their clan into serious trouble some day.

Owner of Zidian.

She and Jin Furen were friends growing up, and it was their idea to betroth their children. 

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s older sister. 

 

She’s shy and not a particularly good cultivator, but she’s a really good sister. She just wants to have her family all be happy and together. Expresses affection via soup.

​

She had been engaged in an arranged marriage to Jin Zixuan, and seems to have genuine feelings for him, though he was conflicted about the situation. However, their engagement was called off when he and Wei Wuxian came to blows.

One of the famed Twin Jades of Gusu, he’s Lan Wangji’s older brother by a couple years and the leader of the Lan clan since their father’s death. He’s also a very skilled cultivator like his brother.

​​

He's friends with Nie Mingjue. He and Meng Yao were mutually attracted to each other when they first met. 

​

After the sack of Cloud Recesses, his whereabouts are unknown, which is very upsetting to his younger brother. 

Lan Xichen and Wangj's paternal uncle. 

​

When it's clear that the Wen attack on Cloud Recesses will have dire consequences for their clan, he urges Lan Xichen to escape.

A peripheral disciple of the Gusu Lan sect. He was the one who lost his sword when they were facing the Water Demon in an attempt to emulate Lan Wangji.

He doesn't wear a headband because he's not a member of the Lan family.

Eldest son of Wen Ruohan, and older brother of Wen Chao. 

Chief Cultivator and Qishan Wen clan leader who is obsessed with getting all four shards of the Yin Iron in order to ensure the continued supremacy of the Wen clan over the other cultivation clans.

 

Using the Yin Iron to create “puppets” out of cultivators.

Seems to have a soft spot for Wen Qing, but otherwise pretty scary and unapproachable.

​

Has two sons, Wen Zu and Wen Chao.

The younger son of Wen Ruohan, he’s arrogant and sadistic.

 

He thinks it’s only natural for everyone else to recognize the power of the Wen clan, and by extension, himself. Despite this, he’s fairly incompetent personally, relying on others to get things done. 

​

Doesn’t trust Wen Qing, and the feeling is mutual.

​

Wen Ning’s older sister. 

 

She is very skilled with medicine. Intelligent and extremely cautious. Her number one goal is keeping her brother safe.

She previously had been tasked by Wen Ruohan with finding the shard of Yin Iron hidden in Cloud Recesses, but she was unable to complete her mission. She is now accompanying Wen Chao, and is in a bit of a tough spot due to her desire to both protect her brother by complying with her mission, but not wanting to harm Wei Wuxian and his friends.

He has health issues as a result of having some of his soul taken by the Dancing Fairy statue when he was a child, and a shutter.

 

He’s shy and nervous, but very loyal and willing to stand up for those he loves. He's especially loyal to Wei Wuxian because of the kindness he showed towards him when they were in Gusu.

Wen Chao's bodyguard.

 

The strong, silent type, he's stoic and mild-mannered, and seems to show a surprising amount of respect for his opponents, despite working closely with Wen Chao. 

Formerly a servant of Wen Chao's wife, her good looks lead to her becoming his mistress.

Petty and arrogant, she enjoys commanding others despite being a servant herself. 

​

Careful to guard her status as Wen Chao's favorite, she tries to eliminate any competition for his attention. 

​

She doesn't have enough spiritual power to carry a sword, so instead she has a branding iron.

​

Jin Clan heir and only legitimate child of Jin Guangshan.

​

Half-brother to Meng Yao.

​

Formerly engaged to Jiang Yanli, but their engagement was broken off after he and Wei Wuxian came to blows. 

​

Arrogant, but also brave and honorable. Despite his father's acquiescence to the Wen clan, he is one of the few to stand up against the way he and the other hostages are being treated by Wen Chao. 

A capable and friendly disciple of the Jin clan, she’s friends with the clan heir, Jin Zixuan, and often accompanies him.

Unfortunately, Wen Chao seems to be attracted to her, which is not lost on his mistresses Wang Lingjiao
