Wei Wuxian
Wei Ying

Energetic and mischievous. Doesn't care much for rules. ​He's also very intelligent and inventive, despite his seemingly easy-going attitude. 

​​

An orphan, he was raised by Jiang Fengmian, who treats him like his own child. He's devoted to his adoptive siblings, Jiang Cheng and Yanli, and would do anything for them.

​​

Hits it off with Nie Huaisang, who he recognizes as a fellow carefree spirit.

​

He became a bit obsessed with getting Lan Wangji's attention since they fought during his first night at Cloud Recesses. Now they're looking for the rest of the Yin Iron so they can seal it in the Cold Pond in Cloud Recesses.

Lan Wangji
Lan Zhan

As a teenager he's known for being an amazingly skilled cultivator, but also for his stubborn adherence to the many, many rules of the Lan clan, and his taciturn demeanor. Looks up to his older brother, Xichen.

His sword is named Bichen, and he is very skilled with the guqin.

Seems to be both intrigued by and frustrated with Wei Wuxian since they fought the first night Wei Wuxian arrived at Cloud Recesses, though he's looked at him in a new light since he overheard his pledge to uphold justice. 

Lan Yi gave him the Yin Iron piece that had been suppressed in the Cold Pond. Using the connection between the pieces, he and Wei Wuxian are trying to track down the other pieces before Wen Ruohan can get to them. 

Nie Huaisang

Younger brother of the Qinghe Nie clan leader, who he is almost the exact opposite of.

He has a zero interest in cultivating or sword work, preferring to spend his time with his friends goofing off, and painting fans, much to his brother's frustration. As a result, he has zero fighting skills.

He and Wei Wuxian quickly became friends at Cloud Recesses on account of their shared playful demeanors.

Meng Yao is his brother's current right-hand man, and often serves as a buffer between them.

Lan Xichen

Title: Zuwu Jun

​

One of the famed Twin Jades of Gusu, he’s Lan Wangji’s older brother by a couple years and the leader of the Lan clan since their father’s death. He’s also a very skilled cultivator like his brother.

He’s a genuinely good guy, and his younger brother looks up to him. Immediately picks up on the attraction between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, and does everything he can to help it along. 

​

He's friends with Nie Mingjue. He and Meng Yao were mutually attracted to each other when they first met. 

Plays a xiao made of white jade called Leibing (glacier), and his sword is named Shueyue (new moon). 

​

He is aware that his brother is going to find the Yin Iron.

​

Wen Chao

The younger son of Wen Ruohan, he’s arrogant and sadistic.

He thinks it’s only natural for everyone else to recognize the power of the Wen clan, and by extension, himself. Despite this, he’s fairly incompetent personally, relying on others to get things done. 

​

Doesn’t trust Wen Qing, and the feeling is mutual.

​

He's now supposed to follow Xue Yang to Yueyang to keep an eye on him, but instead he's following Lan Wangji, who he knows has a piece of Yin Iron after his conversation with Lan Xichen. 

Jiang Cheng

The youngest of the Yunmeng siblings; he and Wei Wuxian are adopted brothers; Lanyi is his biological sister. Heir to the Yungmeng Jiang sect. He's trying very hard to learn the skills he needs to be a good leader in the future.

While he's concerned that Wei Wuxian's antics are going to get them all intro trouble and he seems a bit jealous of him at times, he really loves him like a brother. 

​

Has a crush on Wen Qing. He previously bought a comb to give to her, but he has yet to do so. He seems a bit jealous that his brother wants to spend time with Lan Wangji. 

Jiang Yanli

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian’s older sister. 

She’s shy and not a particularly good cultivator, but she’s a really good sister. She just wants to have her family all be happy and together. Expresses affection via soup.

​

She had been engaged in an arranged marriage to Jin Zixuan, and seems to have genuine feelings for him, though he was conflicted about the situation. However, their engagement was called off when he and Wei Wuxian came to blows. 

Wen Ruohan

Chief Cultivator and Qishan Wen clan leader who is obsessed with getting all four shards of the Yin Iron in order to ensure the continued supremacy of the Wen clan over the other cultivation clans.

Using the Yin Iron to create “puppets” out of cultivators.

Seems to have a soft spot for Wen Qing, but otherwise pretty scary and unapproachable.

​

Has two sons, Wen Zu and Wen Chao.

Jiang Fengmian

Leader of the Yunmeng Jiang clan. Father of Jiang Cheng and Yanli. 

​

A calm and caring man, the other clan leaders seem to value his input.

​

He took in Wei Wuxian after the death of his parents, and treats him like his own child. In fact, some might argue he treats him better than his own son, as he's seems to favor him over Jiang Cheng, a fact that is not lost on his son. 

​

Wen Qing

Wen Ning’s older sister, and a favorite of Wen Ruohan who is a distant cousin. She is originally from the Dafan Mountains, where her remaining family still live.

She is very skilled with medicine. Intelligent and extremely cautious. Her number one goal is keeping her brother safe.

She previously had been tasked by Wen Ruohan with finding the shard of Yin Iron hidden in Cloud Recesses, but she was unable to complete her mission. She is now accompanying Wen Chao, and is in a bit of a tough spot due to her desire to both protect her brother by complying with her mission, but not wanting to harm Wei Wuxian and his friends.

Xue Yang

A rogue cultivator currently working with the Wen clan. He’s known for his charming smile and inhumane deeds that are especially shocking considering his young age.

Possibly a descendant of Xue Chonghai.

Has knowledge of the location of one of the Yin Iron pieces, but is holding out on sharing it until he gets what he wants- which has something to do with the Chang clan in Yueyang, with whom he has a grudge of some kind.

Song Lan

Known as the "distant snow and cold frost".

​

Practices cultivation at Baixue Temple. Known for being a very upright and determined. 

He and Xiao Xingchen are "close" and share a dream of starting a sect that values shared ideals rather than blood-ties.

​

His sword is named Fuxue, and its name is engraved on the blade. ("to brush away snow")

Xiao Xingchen

Known in the cultivation world as "bright moon and gentle breeze". While he values justice, he has a kind heart. He has been attempting to capture Xue Yang to put a stop to his heinous deeds. 

​

He and Song Lan are "close" and share a dream of starting a sect that values shared ideals rather than blood-ties. He's a "rogue" cultivator in that he has no clan or sect he belongs to. 

​

His famous sword is named Shuanghua ("frost flower") and can detect corpse energy. 

​​

He is Baoshan Saren's former disciple, making him Wei Wuxian’s martial uncle. However, since he isn't much older than Wei Wuxian, he never met his mother. He left the mountain in order to help others; he can never return.

Meng Yao

An illegitimate son of the Jin clan leader, and half-brother of Jin Zixuan. 

​

Polite, very capable, and incredibly intelligent, he is Nie Mingjue's righthand-man. He often plays interference between the two Nie brothers.

​

His mother was a prostitute, and he is sensitive to people making comments about his parentage. Despite his position, he is often treated disrespectfully by some members of the Nie Clan. 

​

Was immediately attracted to Lan Xichen when they met at Cloud Recesses, and is concerned for his safety. 

Nie Mingjue

Title: Chifeng Zun (Red Blade Master)

Leader of the Nie clan, and older brother of Nie Huaisang. Owner of Baxia ("to be ruled by force").

​

Good friends with Lan Xichen.

​

Known for his temper and black-and-white view of morality. 

Wen Zhuliu

Wen Chao's bodyguard.

The strong, silent type, he's stoic and mild-mannered, and seems to show a surprising amount of respect for his opponents, despite working closely with Wen Chao. 

Wen Xu
